Check your PAN Card validity status by following these easy steps
The Government of India deactivated more than 11 lakh PAN cards in July 2017 and
recognized and blocked thousands of fake PAN cards. As per law, one individual can have
only one PAN number and the deactivated PAN cards breached that principle. The
blocked fake PAN cards had been issued to people who provided forged PAN card
details or were allotted to non-existent persons. The government will continue to
deactivate unauthorized PAN cards in future as well. If you are not sure of your PAN card
validation, it is advisable to check and know your PAN status online. In case you have
held multiple PAN cards, you can easily see online which one of them is valid now.
Steps to check PAN card validity status
Mentioned below is the sequential process to check your PAN card validation online.
1) Visit the home page of Income tax e-filing portal here
2) Find ‘Know your PAN’ link under the Services header on the left side of the Home Page.
Click on it.
3) Fill in your personal PAN card details in the relevant fields and click on the ‘submit’
tab. For correct PAN card verification, please make sure that the details are the same as
mentioned in your PAN card. In case you get an error for PAN card verification, please
recheck the spellings and ensure that the date format you entered is correct.
4) Once you click on the Submit button, you will receive an OTP on your mobile phone.
Enter the OTP and click on ‘Validate’ to know your PAN card status.
5) You will get the results page as shown below, if your PAN is in ‘active status’.
If you have more than one Permanent account number registered with your provided
details, you will get a message “There are multiple records for this query. Please provide
additional information for PAN card check.” You have to furnish more details like your
father’s name to know the status of your PAN card validation.
If your PAN card status is shown as deactivated or blocked, you have to visit the office of
jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO) to re-activate your PAN card. For PAN card
verification, you will be asked to submit an Indemnity Bond, photo copy of your PAN card
and proof of Income Tax Returns of the last three years.
It’s always better to know you PAN status beforehand by checking it online than getting
into many hassles later on.
